Active Learning That Sparks Curiosity
"“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I learn.” Benjamin Franklin
At The British School of Bali, we believe that children learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning process — not just listening, but doing, thinking, questioning, and creating. Here is how we have brought learning to life across primary classes this week!
Orchid Class have begun their exciting new topic on plants this week. To launch their learning, the children ventured into the local area to explore the variety of plant life around them. They carefully observed the shapes, colours, and structures of different plants, identifying the distinct parts of flowers and considering their functions. Back in class, their discoveries inspired thoughtful discussions about why certain plants grow in particular countries and climates. The children showed excellent curiosity and reasoning as they linked what they saw to wider ideas about habitats and environmental conditions. This hands-on investigation encouraged them to think critically about how living things adapt and thrive in different settings

Lotus Class have been delving into the fascinating world of the five senses. Their investigations involved a lively sensory exploration of a variety of foods, where the children used their senses of taste, touch, and smell to make detailed observations and comparisons. They described textures, flavours, and scents with growing scientific vocabulary and confidence. Through this interactive experience, the children developed a deeper understanding of how our senses work together to help us navigate and make sense of the world. Their enthusiasm and engagement shone throughout the lesson, making for a truly memorable learning experience.

Active learning doesn’t stop at the end of the school day — it continues through our vibrant after-school clubs. During this week’s Multi-Sport Club, the children took part in an energetic introduction to badminton. They practised new skills, such as serving and rallying, while demonstrating great teamwork and sportsmanship. It was wonderful to see them encouraging one another, showing determination, and celebrating each other’s successes. The session was a fantastic example of how active learning extends beyond the classroom, helping pupils build confidence, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning through physical activity.

Well done to all the students and teachers at the British school of Bali for establishing a remarkably strong, varied and exciting curriculum since the school’s September 1st 2025 opening!
