Heroes Up Close: A Day at the Fire Station

On Monday, 8th June, our students visited the local fire station in Gianyar for a morning full of excitement, courage and hands-on discovery. Stepping inside, they were given a rare glimpse into the daily lives of the firefighters who keep our community safe, and came away with a newfound appreciation for the bravery and teamwork behind the job.

The visit began with an introduction to the many tools and equipment firefighters use every day. From helmets and protective suits to hoses, ladders and breathing apparatus, students examined each piece and learned how every item plays its own important role in keeping firefighters safe while they work.

One of the highlights of the morning was getting hands-on with the hoses themselves. Students took turns holding the nozzle and spraying water together, squealing with delight as they felt the force of the water and worked as a team to aim it. It was a wonderful way for the children to experience, even in a small way, the strength and coordination firefighters need on the job.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day came when the firefighters explained that their work extends far beyond fighting fires — they are also called upon for animal control. Coincidentally, the team had caught a snake that very morning and brought it out for the children to see safely (it was non-venomous, and its mouth had been carefully taped shut for everyone's safety). Eyes wide with a mix of nerves and fascination, students gathered around for a closer look, eager to ask questions about how the firefighters had caught it.

To close out the visit on a high note, the firefighters put the hose up once more for a final splash before saying goodbye. Slipping off their shoes and socks and pulling their raincoats on, students ran barefoot through the water, laughing and chasing the spray as it arced through the air. It was the perfect playful finish to a morning full of learning and excitement.

The fire station visit was a meaningful reminder of the courage and dedication shown by community helpers every day. By meeting firefighters in person and learning about the many ways they protect and serve, our students gained a deeper respect for the people who keep us safe — and perhaps a few future heroes were inspired along the way.

A big thank you to the firefighters for so generously sharing their time, expertise and good humour with our students. It was a morning none of them will forget!
