class assemblies

Children at the British School of Bali each have a class assembly per year. In Jasmine Class this year, we decided to perform a short play of ‘Chicken Licken.’ This is in connection with our recent learning of ‘Animals.’ The planning in the Early Years is linked to the children’s interests and they showed an interest in farm animals recently.

The children also showed great pleasure and enjoyment in dressing up and pretending to be another character or animal. They used some of the language from the story in their play later that week.

Our targets also include stories with repetition and rhythm so Chicken Licken is the perfect book for this! The children learned the story by heart, the characters' words and phrases. Here are some of the children learning to write key words from the story.

We linked it to our phonics as we were learning the sound ‘x’ in ‘fox’ and ‘box.’ We then discussed how in words such as socks and locks, it SOUNDS like x at the end but is actually spelled ‘-cks’.

Here are some of the children completing writing by choice in ‘choosing time.’ Each child has a little, yellow, handwriting book and they can write in it any time they wish. They also take it home and show their families the letter of the day and if they wish they can have handwriting homework which is optional and several children enjoy this.

Here are some of the children using role-play language in their own time, pretending the animals are having a tea party and a fox came to try and eat them but they invited the fox to tea instead.

In Art Class with Miss H, they linked their art to our story by painting ‘chickens’ in connection with ‘Chicken Licken.’
