Maths Mastery

Orchid Class have been fully immersed in exploring the concept of area, using a range of engaging, hands-on activities to support and deepen their understanding. We began by taking our learning beyond the classroom and into the playground. Armed with a variety of measuring tools, the students worked collaboratively to measure different spaces around the school. This real-life application allowed them to see the importance of area in everyday contexts, while also developing their teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. There was lots of discussion, estimation and checking along the way, making the learning both active and meaningful.

Back in the classroom, we explored a different approach by using square units to measure area. The students carefully counted squares to calculate the space inside a range of shapes, thinking about accuracy and how to organise their work efficiently. They then extended their learning further by applying their understanding to calculate the area of triangles, discussing how these shapes relate to rectangles and squares. This helped to deepen their conceptual understanding and build confidence when tackling more challenging problems.

Throughout the topic, students have been encouraged to explain their thinking, compare different strategies, and reflect on which methods work best in different situations. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they become more independent in their learning.

The class have shown fantastic enthusiasm, curiosity and perseverance, and have demonstrated a strong understanding of the concepts covered. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and positive attitude.

Well done, Orchid Class – you have all been brilliant mathematicians!
