Bringing Traditional Tales to Life in the Early Years!

In the Early Years, the children have absolutely loved engaging with the topic of Traditional Tales. Acting and role play are a part of everyday life in the Jasmine Classroom and this topic has truly brought their imagination to life.

The children have enjoyed building a house for the Three Little Pigs, helping the Big Bad Wolf climb down the “chimney” and thinking carefully about what items to put in Little Red Riding Hood’s basket. They also linked their maths lessons to the stories by counting bears, ordering them by size and using expressive language to act out famous scenes such as “Someone’s been sitting in MY chair!” (said Mummy Bear) and “The first bowl of porridge was TOO HOT!”

To extend their play, the children pretended sand was bowls of porridge and enjoyed “feeding” their teddy bears. They also loved singing the lively song “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” which helped connect their storytelling with music and rhythm.

As we explored Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Little Red Riding Hood, we also thought about food – what the three bears like to eat and what Grandma might enjoy for her lunch. A highlight of the term was our energetic dance session called “I’m in the Mood for Food!” where the children acted out cooking skills such as mixing, frying, cracking eggs and stacking pancakes.

Next, we will be reading “Mr Wolf’s Pancakes”, linking perfectly with our current interests and the ongoing theme of Traditional Tales. The children have also been busy creating pathways, bridges and rivers as part of their play. A recent visit to the bridge and pond at Onyx gave them the perfect setting to become the Three Billy Goats Gruff – and thankfully, no one was eaten by the troll.

What a wonderful start to our learning journey through Traditional Tales, filled with imagination, storytelling and lots of laughter!
